Last week I got a text from my friend who gave birth to this beautiful munchkin, and is still recovering from her natural child birth a few weeks ago. Her husband had work come up for the day she asked if I’d spend the day with her.
The old, overwhelmed frazzled me would’ve probably said ‘I’d love to but I have so much work to do honey!’.
The new me is different. She has clarity, she’s organized and she leaves enough wiggle room in her schedule for opportunities and situations like these. I finished my most important, high-priority tasks in the morning before I headed her way..
It was a beautiful day. I cuddled with my friend and her bundle of joy. I was able to spend quality time with both of them, catching up with her, giving her Reiki, and singing to him and watching his cherry-red lips as he slept on my chest. While the two napped I got a lot of work done too.
Sometimes we get so caught up with day to day work that we forget why we’re living: for moments like these. To smell a baby’s hair and to eat bagels with your girlfriend.
I, like my clients in my coaching program, do an exercise called True North every 6-12 months. It’s meant to serve as an inner compass, a clarity-map for our life and work’s priorities. From this clarity we map out their long term and short team goals and intentions and create weekly tasks. This is what helped me the other day when my friend texted. I know exactly my priorities – both persona and professional – and it makes saying yes (or no) VERY easy.
Let’s dive into five ways to invite effortless productivity…
Your True North
Before fancy GPS apps and software existed, we had maps. Before maps, we had the stars (we had better visibility back then), particularly the north star. It provided weary travelers and people on the path with a compass of sorts on which direction to take. With clarity about the four directions, it was easy to follow the path and move towards the end destination. We need the same clarity about our personal and professional priorities. We can get sidelined sometimes and forget why we’re here. With the True North exercise it becomes crystal clear where we’re going and why. From there saying yes to what aligns with these priorities becomes very very easy. Saying no, even more so.
Connecting With Your Heart’s Mantra
All my clients do this exercise in the coaching program. Our heart’s mantra is a uniquely created affirmation that you write after a journaling exercise. Once you have your heart’s mantra you move through the day with an inner compass. You say yes to what aligns with the heart’s mantra and no to everything else. You create boundaries. You respect your time and energy. This is a transformative exercise and will serve as a guiding light for the rest of your life.
Finding Your Center
According to Ayurveda, some times are more conducive for developing a strong relationship with your center. When we’re aligned in our body, mind, heart and spirit we can move through tasks and activities with more ease and enthusiasm. In the webinar I’ll share four important aspects of our center that need nourishment daily. When we have this foundation, we’re able to get things done with more confidence and clarity.
Managing Your Time and Energy
While there are many mindset and spiritual practices and techniques that create a foundation to get more done with more ease, we also dive deep into the practical. How can you manage your calendar and clock on a daily, weekly and monthly basis so you feel like the master of your business and life and not the other way around? Similarly we can encounter many energetic gas-guzzlers in our internal and external environment that can suck our ability to give and live our best.
Embracing Your Femininity
Most clients come to me burned out and overwhelmed because they knew and implemented a masculine style of time management. We have a smidgen of the testosterone levels that men have and therefore, a more rigid and unyielding system of time management can burn women out pretty quickly. Not just that it can also deprive us of the joy and passion we started our business out with.
